The performance of both the algorithms is tested on randomly generated graphs as no benchmark graph is available for this problem so far. In this paper, a population based genetic algorithm (GA) and a single solution based tabu search algorithm are proposed to find the shortest path in a given network having trapezoidal intuitionistic fuzzy arc weights. So this problem deals with real life situations more effectively. Although shortest path problem is very important and well known problem in graph theory but the approach of taking arc weights as intuitionistic fuzzy numbers is new and make this problem more realistic as theoretically these numbers has been proved very useful to deal with distinct real life factors. ![]() Pushed by surfer dad Harry to excel, he was soon impressing everyone on big waves at Makaha and Sunset Beach. There, he was a young haole, enduring merciless hazing by locals. Hakman spent his early years in Redondo Beach and Palos Verdes, but he moved to the North Shore of Oahu by age 12. He started in a shed in Costa Mesa with Bob McKnight, and now he ends up a head of a behemoth Aztec pyramid-sitting in the jungles of Europe, so to speak.” “To me, there’s a sort of cynical beauty in that happening. “Is he? That’s crazy,” says Steve Pezman, the former Surfer magazine publisher who today publishes The Surfer’s Journal, when told that Hakman remains an executive at Quiksilver Europe. And while he doesn’t deserve all the credit behind the brand’s ascent, surfing observers maintain Hakman is the key to understand the origins of Quiksilver’s appeal-and how it ultimately went astray. He didn’t respond to an interview request via longtime friend Duke Boyd, founder of the Hang Ten surf clothing line in the 1960s. Now marketing director of Quiksilver Europe (legally untouched by its American sister’s bankruptcy), Hakman lives in France. And the biggest tragedy? It didn’t have to be this way. It’s a once-unthinkable fate for the company that was supposed to surf on forever. And last week, Quiksilver representatives started court-ordered mediation with creditors in New York the company’s stock wallows at a fraction of a penny per share on the New York Stock Exchange. Within days, 80 employees at the company’s mothership in Huntington Beach were laid off. According to filings, the company’s balance sheet had assets of just $337 million-less than half the total it owed. 9, when Quiksilver sought relief in a Delaware bankruptcy court from $826 million in debt owed to more than 30 creditors. But the brand has crashed mightily ever since, leading up to this past Sept. In 2006, the firm reported revenue of $2.5 billion-a company record. It made Orange County an action-sports-apparel Silicon Valley and undertook acquisitions with the intent of solidifying Quiksilver as a global brand for the good life. In Orange County, the company became a local powerhouse, gobbling up talented designers, artists, executives-a sand-and-surf Apple with no signs of ebbing. And by 2004, it announced annual earnings that exceeded $1 billion. Within 10 years, it became the first publicly listed surfwear company soon after, it opened boutiques in New York, Paris, London and Dubai. Soon, the surf mags were running photo after photo of pros gliding down famous waves such as Banzai Pipeline and Sunset Beach while wearing them-the best advertising imaginable.įrom its garage-like space, Quiksilver swelled. Before long, Hawaii-based Americans such as Hakman sported them. The combination of Velcro, snaps and a high waistband made them grip hips and stay on, even in the largest waves. In 1976, the best surfers in the world began seeking Quiksilver because they were the best. “He didn’t say much, but I think he was horrified by our business act.”īut Green saw something in the two-McKnight, a USC business school graduate, and Hakman, a classic beach bum who knew golden opportunities the moment he saw them-and used the rest of his stay in Southern California to teach the pair how to build the trunks he had invented. “ was checking us out,” Hakman recalls in Jarratt’s 1997 tome, Mr. ![]() Days later, when they regained a degree of sobriety back in Orange County, a more businesslike philosophy ensued. They took turns blasting across the Mojave Desert, daring one another to swerve onto highway berms and even crashing into an exit ramp while doing 90. The six surfers loaded up on beer, tequila and cigarettes piled into a Lincoln Continental and headed to Las Vegas. The party that began at the Quiet Woman didn’t end there. To Hakman and McKnight, the four Aussies were “all talking gibberish.” But after half an hour, the Americans were talking gibberish, too-and an empire was born. With three buddies, the Quiksilver founder was “propped up in a booth, surrounded by empty wine bottles,” writer Phil Jarratt related two decades later. Green was already slurring his words when the two arrived. He asked Hakman and McKnight to meet him at the Quiet Woman, the Corona del Mar pickup joint marked by a pub sign featuring a woman missing her head. And now the company’s founder, Alan Green, was jetting to Orange County to check on his newborn operation. ![]() For weeks during the latter half of 1976, the twentysomethings had fumbled with sewing machines in a Spartan shed off 17th Street in Costa Mesa, tasked with getting America ready for Quiksilver, a then-obscure Australian clothing brand known by only the most committed surfers. Jeff Hakman and Bob McKnight were worried-they couldn’t get the trunks quite right.

![]() ![]() The reasons are simple – they fit your explanation of why we shouldn’t have individual performance targets. Lastly is the term “targets.” Recently I positted a very radical approach of no longer using targets. So when you say “turnover” we define them the same way. This same type of standardization would be applied to measures we want to compare. We don’t have standard definitions for things like “benchmarks, baselines, and targets.” It makes it very difficult to have meaningful discussions if our language lacks standardization. Standards are something I think our industry (performance measurement) lacks. ![]() The premise is the same, but for me standards are industry-established or industry-affirmed values. Standards is where my definition deviates a little. They’re pretty much the same as I use for Baseline and Benchmark – Baseline is my starting point, Benchmarks are when I want to compare to others (preferably a standard : – ). DISCUSSION:ĭo you use these terms in your organisation or business? Collaborate with me on the Measure Up blog by sharing examples of how you’re using baselines, benchmarks, targets and standards. Standards are similar to targets, but they apply ‘here and now’: you’ve made a promise to your customers and you want to monitor how well you’re keeping that promise. Just because you have a standard doesn’t mean your business processes are capable of meeting it! Part of performance improvement is to design our processes to make them capable of meeting any standards. It means that we want to see our performance measure’s values for Days to Fix Problems to be under 2 days in at least 95% of cases. What is a performance standard?Īgain from, a generic definition of the word ‘standard’ is: A level of quality or attainmentįor example, when we make a promise to our customers to fix their problem within 2 days 95% of the time, the standard for our performance measure becomes 2 days. If you tell everyone to work harder to ‘hit target’ every month, you’re just compensating for a process that isn’t capable and it will burn everyone out before too long. To shift a baseline performance level to a targeted performance level takes time and effort to redesign the underlying business processes so they are capable of better performance. I’m not super-keen on using the word ‘attack’, so I would adapt this to define a performance target as a level of performance we are aiming to reach in the future. ![]() What is a performance target?Ī target is defined as (from ): A person, object, or place selected as the aim of an attack. Because others have achieved that level of performance, it’s easier to conceive that you can too. They are levels of performance that another organisation has achieved for that same performance measure you’re interested in.īenchmarks from organisations that represent world’s best practice or industry best practice can become targets that you use for your performance measures. Verb: Evaluate or check (something) by comparison with a standard: “we are benchmarking our performance against external criteria”.īenchmarks in performance measurement typically come from outside your organisation. Noun: A standard or point of reference against which things may be compared or assessed. What is a performance benchmark?ĭ defines ‘benchmark’ as both a noun and a verb, and both are useful for understanding how this term applies to performance measurement: A single value of your performance measure is not enough to act as your baseline, because you’ll end up mistaking the routine variation in your measure for change. In an XmR chart, your baseline is the Central Line. The definition of ‘baseline’ is provided by as: A minimum or starting point used for comparisons.Ī baseline for your performance measure is the average level of performance that you are currently at, and that you will compare future performance levels with to test if performance is really changing. It’s important to do that discerning and prevent time-wasting debates and misinterpretation that get in the way of performance improvement. People use them interchangably, and often can’t provide a definitive definition for each to discern one from another. Some of the most used terms that describe levels of performance are: So, exactly what are benchmarks, baselines, targets and standards?Īn area of confusion that comes up regularly in my workshops and consulting is the array of words we use to describe two very simple statements about performance: current performance and desired performance. In performance improvement, a few important terms are often confused or misused. What Are Benchmarks, Baselines, Targets And Standards? Octoby Stacey Barr | Last modified: September 5, 2018 Everything from the characters themselves to the background and even the UI are simply stunning to look at.Ĭonsidering this was Winged Cloud’s first foray into the visual novel industry, I suppose it’s not a bad debut. That being said, the artwork is extremely well done and the story itself is entertaining, even if it’s pretty short. The only interactivity comes at the very end, when the player is prompted to select one of two options on how to progress the story. This game is really nothing more than a script and a slideshow. When it comes to gameplay, there’s not much to talk about. But if you’re expecting a VN that’s a “certain type of way”, you’re probably going to be disappointed. Fans of the genre would likely categorize Sakura Spirit as “ecchi” – meaning light and playful. There’s no actual sex or full nudity anywhere in the game itself. However, the story isn’t particularly erotic. The female characters are busty and oftentimes naïve. ![]() ![]() However, upon entering the shrine he finds himself transported to an alternate time and dimension where he gets caught in the middle of a conflict between the local authorities and a duo of humanoid fox-girls.Īs you might expect, the story is full of cutesy, bishōjo motifs. In order to settle his nerves, he visits a religious shrine in a nearby forest to pray for good fortune. Sakura Spirit is a story about a young martial artist who is about to participate in a major tournament. Instead, this company is based in the west, but they make products that are heavily influenced by Japanese VNs. Interestingly enough, Winged Cloud is not an Asian developer. Sakura Spirit is the first game in the well-known Sakura series of visual novels from Winged Cloud. But the vast majority them seem to be adult-themed and more often than not, anime based. However, as the genre has evolved, some developers have included interactive portions or mini-games. True visual novels (like the ones popular in Japan) typically don’t feature any real gameplay elements, they just tell a story. The majority of visual novels originate in either Japan or China and are later translated to English. They are essentially linear stories that feature still pictures (with occasional animations). In case you are not familiar with this genre of game, visual novels are exactly what they sound like. The bargain shopper in me couldn’t pass up the deal, and as a result I suddenly found myself owning a number of visual novels from the Sakura series. However, several years ago there was a massive bundle sale on visual novels from a developer called Winged Cloud. For this reason, I’ve always avoided the cheap adult-themed games that tend to lurk around every corner of the the Steam online store – particularly, visual novels. In the past I’ve always tried to pick out games that, while being somewhat sexy, have always had some redeeming qualities. ![]() Instead games like Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball or HuniePop usually end up taking the spotlight. When shopping for green products, take note that “plant-derived fragrances” doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s an eco-friendly product. Greener cleaning products contain fewer chemical ingredients that irritate the skin, damage clothing, or pollute the air and waterways. Green cleaning is the process of using cleaning methods, products, and solutions to reduce the introduction of harmful chemicals into the environment and your home. If you’re looking for a laundry detergent that’s gentle on your clothes, tough on stains, and better for the environment, opt for a green laundry detergent. The Spruce Home Improvement Review Board.Or some type of innovation would occur involving reducing or replacing SLES, the ingredient that causes the dioxane byproduct. could try to reformulate, to get below the standard, which will also raise the cost. “There are processes out there that can remove 1,4-dioxane, at a high cost, so the cost of detergent will go up. Surfactant expert Brian Grady told us, “You’re going to see significant changes in because, to my knowledge, almost all of the detergents on the market today won’t pass the standards.” He mentioned a few possible consequences of the new bill. Although the detergent companies aren’t actively putting this contaminant into their detergents, it’s unfortunately a byproduct of their formulation process. For reference, according to the Citizens Campaign test results, detergents from brands like Tide, Gain, Persil, All, and Arm & Hammer all have 1,4-dioxane levels above the limit. It will be enacted by the end of 2022, banning sales of products with trace concentrations of 2 ppm or higher, and, by the end of 2023, 1 ppm or higher. In December 2019, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill that would “prohibit the sale of cosmetic or cleaning products containing 1,4-dioxane.” The bill came as a result of contaminated drinking water (1,4-dioxane) in Long Island. Tide Ultra Stain Release was also rated Best for Most Tough Stains by Consumer Reports. But, like our other picks, Tide Ultra Stain Release did a respectable job on most of them. ![]() (It also performed better than any other detergent on carbon, but we didn’t count the results from that stain in making our pick because we don’t think it’s as meaningful as the others.) No single detergent came out on top for all of our homemade stains. Tide Ultra Stain Release bested the competition on most of the stain strip, removing the most sebum, cocoa, and blood, and it was second best at removing the wine (after Persil). ![]() (Ingredients aren’t printed on the bottle, but P&G lists them online.) In our testing, those extra enzymes produced visibly better results, which were also borne out by the colorimeter measurements. And Tide Ultra Stain Release has the greatest number of enzymes of any detergent that P&G makes, a company representative told us. Surfactant expert Brian Grady (who was a project engineer at Procter & Gamble, parent company of Tide, from 1987 to 1989) explained to us that detergent prices largely reflect the number of different enzymes in their formulas. (Powder can have an especially hard time dissolving in cold-water washes.) Liquid detergent can also be used directly for pretreating stains. If you have ever started a load of laundry, walked away, and come back to find clumps of powder detergent or an undissolved pod among wet, dirty laundry, you can probably appreciate how foolproof liquid detergent is. One of their big advantages is that, unlike powder detergent and pods, they’re pre-dissolved. Liquid detergents are popular for a variety of reasons. Procter & Gamble told us that, according to a Nielsen report of sales from 20, 73% of products in the laundry category are liquid, 20% are pods, and 7% are powders. Not only did they perform better than powders and pods in our last round of testing, but they also account for the majority of what’s sold. For this round of testing, we decided to focus solely on liquid laundry detergents. There are three main types of laundry detergent: liquid, powder, and pods (called “unit-doses” by the industry, they’re also known as “packs,” “discs,” “single-dose,” or “tablets”). ![]() Orcs, goblins, demons, dark knights, zombies, and many more!
